New wood species by Accoya

Accoya™ wood is a “new wood species” as mentioned on the Site. This wood has properties that match those of the best tropical hardwoods, using a non-toxic treatment and wood from sustainable sources. The wood is stable and easy to maintain, saving both environmental and financial costs.

You can use it for exterior doors, garden furniture, sills, windowframes, marine uses, decorative architectural applications,… and the maintenance frequency reduced from once every 3-5 years to once every 10 -15 years.

The technology behind Accoya™ wood is based on wood acetylation. Acetylation effectively changes the free hydroxyls within the wood into acetyl groups. Free hydroxyl groups adsorb and release water according to changes in the climatic conditions. This is the main reason why wood swells and shrinks. So when the wood is processed the ability of the wood to adsorb water is greatly reduced, rendering the wood more dimensionally stable and, extremely durable.
